As much as I am sad to see summer go, I always get excited to switch my decor over to the next season and this year that includes my front window box! You can check out my summer window box here! By just swapping out plants, you can give your house an entirely new look and feel for the season.

For the window box I used yellow and red mums, kale, rudbeckia and grass. I find for a 7 foot window box 9 plants work best. For my other planters I left the purple fountain grass and added some mums and kale. Costco has a great deal on mums right now. You can get 4 medium pots for $18.99. My other window box plants are from Gertens.

I am already looking forward to switching it over to winter and adding spruce tips and lights.

Rachel

For a recent baby shower that I hosted I experimented with a new type of floral centerpiece. I found this long low acrylic floral centerpiece on Amazon. I had seen similar centerpieces pop up on my Instagram feed and though it would be fun to try to summer flowers.

I used my garden flowers along with roses and eucalyptus from Trader Joes (my favorite store to buy cut flowers from!).

I started by filling the vessel with cool water and floral food. I then added the roses, followed by dahlias and zinnias. I finished with the filler flowers and poked in the eucalyptus. I found it worked best to cut the flower stems 3-4 inches and place 1-3 stems in each hole at angle. Once you start to fill the vessel you can prop flowers up on each other to get the full look.

I will be creating this centerpiece again as it was so fun! If traveling with this centerpiece, I would recommend adding water once on location as it is difficult to transport with water in place.

Rachel

One of our first projects last year at our new house was installing our raised garden beds. My dad so graciously build them for me. We installed four garden beds that are roughly 4 feet by 10 feet long. Awhile ago I a saw a photo of in ground beds with pavers in between them and I loved the look. We decided to use that as inspiration and installed pavers around our garden beds.

We dug up the sod and put down a layer of class five gravel. We then started laying the pavers. We purchased these from Lowe’s. There are no pavers directly under each garden bed, only the border. I have absolutely loved having these pavers. It makes mowing so much easier. It is also nice to walk in-between them. Weeds are very minimal. I spray a homemade mixture of salt and vinegar to keep weeds from growing between the pavers.

Once the pavers were in done, we set the raised beds in place. We used the sod, extra branches and grass clippings to fill the bottom of the beds. We filled the remaining portion with garden soil and compost.

These raised beds have made gardening so much more enjoyable. They are easy to maintain and I was able to plant as soon as the weather allowed this spring. Our plants are flourishing, especially the tomatoes. I have never had tomato plants as large before! So many of my neighbors have asked about them and my dad has even had orders placed for raised garden beds as a result!
